Before getting started with acoustic treatment, it’s a good idea to have a basic understanding of acoustics in general. The good news is…you don’t need a degree in acoustical engineering to understand it purpose.Acoustic treatment is about understanding sound, so keep a few basics in mind. Sound moves as a wave, so like ripples on water it can bounce back. Most sound we hear bounces off a surface first. The result is an invisible riot right in front of you.
Let’s talk about some terms that would be used so that you would understand sound wave kinetics in a space. (How sound waves travel in a space after its been projected from a source)
1 SOUND WAVE REFLECTIONS: When sound travels in a given medium, it strikes the surface of another medium and bounces back in some other direction, this phenomenon is called the reflection of sound. The waves are called the incident and reflected sound waves. Reflection of sound waves off surfaces can lead to one of two phenomena – an echo or a reverberation. And it alterate drastically the quality of the real sound produced. A space without effective acoustic treatment will experience too much reflections, and that will makes communication unpleasant to hearing, and listeners. (Music will become poor and at the end of the day become noise).
2 ECHOES: In audio signal processing and acoustics, Echo is a reflection of sound that arrives at the listener with a delay after the direct sound. The delay is proportional to the distance of the reflecting surface from the source and the listener. Typical examples are the echo produced by the bottom of a well, by a building, or by the walls of an enclosed room and an empty room. A true echo is a single reflection of the sound source. A space without effective acoustic treatment will have too much echo problems, which will make sound unbearable to listeners.
3 SOUND WAVE REVERBERATION: Reverberation, in acoustics, is the persistence of sound after a sound is produced (creating a fake sound from the original sound wave produced). A reverberation is perceived when the reflected sound wave reaches your ear in less than 0.1 second after the original sound wave. Large halls do have this problem frequently, and the bigger the hall, the greater the reverberation, which alterate quality of the real sound produced. A large space without effective acoustic treatment will have too much reverberation, and that will makes communication unpleasant to hearing, and listeners. (Music will become poor and at the end of the day become noise).
4 SOUND WAVE INTERFERENCE: is the phenomenon that occurs when two waves meet while traveling along the same medium. This causes unrest to sound waves which will cause an alteration and distort to the actual sound produced from source. After sounds are reflected from walls, it causes sound waves to travel in different motion in which at the end of the day they collide with themselves within a space, this phenomenon will then cause sound produced from a source to sound squashed if the space is not acoustically treated. This happens most times in small halls, classrooms, libraries, office space, Eateries, event centers, conference rooms Etc.
5 ACOUSTIC RESONANCE: is a phenomenon where acoustic systems amplify sound waves whose frequency matches one of its own natural frequencies of vibration. This occur when sound waves absorbed by a medium causes the other medium to also experience the same motion, this happens mostly to woofers that are not acoustically placed in a space, it causes sound waves to travel to the listeners, making them feel a vibration in which they might not be comfortable with, and it is not advisable for people with heart problems and high blood pressures. So it is very advisable for one to acoustically treat any space having woofers.
6 SOUND LEAKS: This is known as sound flanking. The sound will move from one room to another through direct and indirect paths. Some amount of energy will travel through or around a wall or ceiling. Opening in a partition that allows sound to pass through. This is mostly experienced in residential areas whereby the music from another house will be disturbing to other resident people around, and also experienced in higher institution hostels, You can advise such a person to get TAJ acoustic treatment for his home, or if you are been disturbed that your sound system is disturbing to the environment, you can also demand for TAJ acoustic treatment. Solving noise issues is our priority.
7 DIFFUSION: in acoustics and architectural engineering, is the efficacy by which sound energy is spread evenly in a given environment. A perfectly diffusive sound space is one that has certain key acoustic properties which are the same anywhere in the space. A non-diffuse sound space would have considerably different reverberation time as the listener moved around the room. Virtually all spaces are non-diffuse. Spaces which are highly non-diffuse are ones where the acoustic absorption is unevenly distributed around the space, or where two different acoustic volumes are coupled. It is mostly advised to use a sound diffusor acoustics in music studios to ensure even distribution of sound waves. You can get this by contacting the TAJ acoustics team here
8 REFRACTION OF SOUND WAVES: Involves a change in the direction of waves as they pass from one medium to another. Refraction, or bending of the path of the waves, is accompanied by a change in speed and wavelength of the waves. So if the media (or its properties) are changed, the speed of the wave is changed. Thus, waves passing from one medium to another will undergo refraction. Refraction of sound waves is most evident in situations in which the sound wave passes through a medium with gradually varying properties.
9 DIFFRACTION OF SOUND WAVES: Involves a change in direction of waves as they pass through an opening or around a barrier in their path. Diffraction of sound waves is commonly observed; we notice sound diffracting around corners or through door openings, allowing us to hear others who are speaking to us from adjacent rooms. This happens mostly in offices, To get a private office apartment well treated for good communication and privacy, The office space needs to be acoustically treated. It is seldom experienced too in event centers.
10 NOISE: Noise is unwanted sound judged to be unpleasant, loud or disruptive to hearing. If a space is not acoustically treated, what will be experienced from such space is noise, this phenomenon called noise is very hazardous to the health of humans and even to the eardrum. It causes headache, severe migraine, stress Etc. In TAJ ACOUSTICS we are bent on eliminating noise effectively from any space given by acoustically treating the space to give the best clean and reasonable sound to human ears.
Now lets talk about how sound travels in a space:
Whenever a sound is made in a space, here’s what happens to it: Starting at the source, it projects outward in all directions.A small portion of it (known as direct sound) travels in a straight line to the wall of the space and listeners occupied in the space. The remainder (known as reflected sound) bounces randomly between the surfaces of the space, causing sound wave reflection to sound wave interference at the end of the day, the sound waves begins to cause a continuous sound effect in the open space leading to excessive reverb or echoes, till it becomes noise and unpalatable to human hearing, which can lead to ear damage, or ear fatigue, headaches leading to migraine, high blood pressure, the mind been in a state of unrest, and inability to have active meditation on what it’s been passed across through the sound produced from it source, renders communication not effective.
Moments later, some of those reflections reach the microphone by chance then you begin to hear a striking humming effect from the speakers (if in an auditorium that microphones and speakers are used to project sound) which might become louder if not quickly responded to and unpalatable to human ears, in fact it disturbs the cerebellum(brain) and makes the listeners stay unpleasing and uncomforting, which according to records most listeners don’t return to such environments again (this has been proven most in churches-in relation to their members, libraries-in relation to readers, classrooms-in relation to students who need a very quiet and non-distracting environment to actively study and concentrate well while lecture is ongoing, Eateries-in relation to customers that what to relax without noise, transport waiting lounge, clubs, event centers, conference rooms and lecture rooms).
Now…
Since direct sound interacts with the room, its frequency balance remains impure, and its real correct tone altered.
With reflected sound, each new reflection has the potential to CHANGE the original sound ever-so-slightly.
Depending on the size of the space you are using, and the reflective surfaces within it.
This change could be either LARGE or SMALL, GOOD or BAD.
In most space it’s very bad and awful, especially because of the kind environment we find ourselves. And this is why TAJ ACOUSTICS is a company that is bent on actively eliminating any unwanted sound waves that is still in its unrest form moving from one spot to the other in a space causing unnecessary noise and distraction to listener’s active concentration.
